Description: THE OREGON TRAIL Being Sketches of Prairie and Rocky Mountain Life Written by Francis Parkman, Jr. and published by A. L. Burt Company, New York. The book is a reprint of the classic work first published in 1849. It is a book in Burt’s Pocket Edition of Standard Classics. These books were published uniformly in red leather and small size. They were all priced $1.00 at the time. The book is undated, but there is a gift inscription on the front endpaper dated 1928. The Oregon Trail is a breezy, first-person account of a 2-month summer tour in 1846 of the states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas. Parkman was 23 at the time. The heart of the book covers the three weeks Parkman spent hunting buffalo with a band of Oglala Sioux. From Wikipedia: Francis Parkman, Jr. (September 16, 1823 – November 8, 1893) was an American historian, best known as author of The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life and his monumental seven-volume France and England in North America. These works are still valued as historical sources and as literature. He was also a leading horticulturist, briefly a Professor of Horticulture at Harvard University and author of several books on the topic. Parkman was a trustee of the Boston Athenæum from 1858 until his death in 1893. DESCRIPTION: 320 pages 6 7/8 x 4 1/2 inches First printing, hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in good condition with a poor dustjacket. The red leather gilt embellished cover is very clean. but with a little wear at the corners and a chip in the leather at the top of the spine. It is also a little cocked—that is, it has a slant to the spine. The top page edges are gilded. There is a gift inscription in ink on the front endpaper. The book came into contact with moisture at some time as the bottom page edges are all a little rippled with a very light tide mark visible on some of them. The moisture also slightly darkened the leather of the cover. There is also some transference of the red color from the leather onto the edges of the endpapers. The interior is otherwise good with no other marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is toned with age, but not brittle. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The dustjacket is mostly there, but tattered with many tears and chips out of the spine areas and corners. There has been some repairing on the back of the dust jacket with acid free archival tape.
