Description: We live on the shores of Lake Michigan, LOVE the beach & collecting things….so it’s only natural that we would be avid Petoskey stone hunters! We found all of these (and tons more!) this summer! These are 50 small, jewelry appropriate, raw/un-polished Petoskey stones from Lake Michigan. These are specifically from the Charlevoix area! They are just freaking beautiful. The vintage Ball glass jar is included. The rocks are shown with water, but water will be removed before shipping. The Petoskey stone, Michigan’s state stone, is actually fossilized pre-historic coral known as Favosite. These stones are prehistoric coral fossils that can be found in & around Lake Michigan and are remnants of a tropical sea that existed during the Devonian period. The stones are named after the Native American word "Petoskey,” which means "rays of light", because the fossil resembles sun rays. The stones are distinguishable based upon their unique exoskeleton structures. The actual stones are made up of hexagonaria percarinata which consists of tightly packed, six-sided corallites, which are the skeletons of the once-living coral polyps. The center of each polyp was the mouth and contained tentacles that reached out for food. The hexagon shape of each cell and thin lines radiating out from the dark “eye” in the center are distinguishing features unique to this fossil. Thank you for visiting our little shop!
