Antique Bookends: Lion by H.L. Judd Co.; Cast Iron; c1925

Description: Antique cast iron bookends of a lion made by H. L. Judd Company around 1925. Not listed in Kuritzky and De Costa's Collector's Encyclopedia of Bookends (2006), though they list a similar set of lion bookends marked "Moffatt" on p 148 (plate 908). The set for sale here is embossed at the bottoms of the back sides with 9734, a four-diigit code like those typically used by Judd. MATERIAL: Each bookend is made of two cast iron pieces screwed together at the bottoms of the back sides. A magnet sticks to both pieces. CONDITION: The bookends are in near fine condition. The chocolate brown sections with the lions do not show wear. There are a couple of small areas where the applied green patina has chipped or worn off, notably at the front edge of the base of one bookend (see the second photo) and at the very bottoms of both back sides. One bookend shows some rubbing at the top left corner of the front side and at the top of the front edge of the base. The screws on the back sides are tight and probably original and show some discoloration. The felts are probably replacements. DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT: Each bookend is approximately 5.5" tall, 6" wide, and 2.25" deep at the base. The bookends as a set weigh 5 pounds and .4 ounce. The photographs are part of the description.
