Description: In 1993 the Queen, Elizabeth II, decided to open certain parts of Buckingham Palace to the public for the first time, just for a couple of months each summer. The initial idea was to raise money to help with the repairs to Windsor Castle which had been devastated by fire the year before. With an entrance fee of £8, and around 300,000 to 400,000 visitors a year for the first few years, Her Majesty's idea was successful. Of course, tourists want a souvenir and one of the first such mementos produced was this English Fine Bone China mug. The design on the mug was inspired by the damask upholstery in the Blue Drawing Room, one of the magnificent State Rooms in the Palace designed by John Nash for King George IV in the 1820s. This Buckingham Palace mug is as new. It was bought by my mother when she visited the Palace in early 1994, and it has been in its box, with its little fold-out card, pretty much ever since. The decoration, and the gilding, are as fresh and clean as the day it was made! The mug is just under 3" high, and just over 3" wide without the handle.
