He was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee and he first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #266 which was published August 1990. Gambit is a mutant with the ability to charge objects, usually his trademark playing cards, with kinetic energy, causing them to explode. He is also skilled in breaking and entering, the use of a Bo staff and hand-to-hand combat, particularly the French kickboxing martial art Savate.
