Description: This book is devoted to a new method of calculating optical aberrations by determining the exact aberration coefficients of the various orders. Prepared for both lens designers in the traditional manner and researchers concerned with the application of computers to optical design, it contains many formulas which will greatly shorten the process of calculating aberration coefficients. To provide background for the reader, the author first develops the theory of calculating monochromatic aberration of all orders in a given system, with par- ticular emphasis on first, third and fifth order coefficients. Professor Buchdahl thereupon explains how changes in the aberrations for different object and image positions can easily be calculated, once the coefficients of a typical lens system have been obtained. The remainder of the book deals with chromatic aberration coefficients and adjustment of aberration coefficients by changes in the constitution of the system. This last section is particularly important since the author does not stop at the first differential coefficient. The present Dover edition includes thirteen papers which originally appeared in the Journal of the Optical Society of America between 1956 and 1967. Among the topics stressed are the calculation of coefficients of order seven, coefficients of spherical aberration and circular coma of order nine, spherical aberration of order eleven, as well as other important situations involving higher order coefficients. "Dr. Buchdahl presents a solution to these problems, which, to judge by the numerical examples he gives, is remarkably successful,"- Journal of Scientific Instruments (J. L. Houghton). Second (1968) edition, with new preface, thirteen additional papers. 33 figures Paperbound A DOVER EDITION DESIGNED FOR YEARS OF USE! We have made every effort to make this the best book possible. Our paper is opaque, with minimal show-through; it will not discolor or become brittle with age. Pages are sewn in signatures, in the method traditionally used for the best books, and will not drop out, as often happens with paperbacks held together with glue. Books open flat for easy reference. The binding will not crack or split.
