About public domain pre-1923 postcards: A law was passed in 1998 that re-defined when a copyrighted work becomes legal and free to use by anyone in the US. I'm not an attorney, but I've been aware of the DMCA almost since it went into effect. Where postcards are concerned, all works that were copyrighted prior to 1923 are now in the public domain. You can search Google to confirm it. We use postmark dates to establish a card's age for this purpose. For every modified postcard in our 8x10 print category, we're careful to keep a copy of the postmark on the back of the card showing any date before 1923. As for prints of fine art by various masters: We use a different criteria for those. A few years ago the Metropolitan Museum of Art declared many hundreds of their copyrighted works to be in the public domain. Our fine art prints are from that list. For those we include copies of the declaration page showing that for every image we modify for our prints. Look at the last sentence at the very bottom of those pages.
