The South Orkney Islands are a group of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. The South Orkney Islands were discovered in 1821 by two seal hunters, Nathaniel Palmer and George Powell. The islands were originally named Powell's Group and the main island was named Coronation Island because the discovery took place in the year of the coronation of King George IV. In 1823, James Weddell visited the islands, gave the archipelago its modern name (in honor of the Orkney Islands, which belong to Scotland) and renamed a number of islands. The islands were subsequently frequently visited by sealers and whalers, but no exploration was undertaken until the expedition of William Bruce in 1903, who wintered on Laurie Island. Bruce explored the islands and set up a weather station, which was taken over by meteorologists from Argentina after he sailed in 1904. This station is still in operation and is the oldest continuously inhabited station in Antarctica. In 1908, Great Britain declared sovereignty over all sub-Antarctic and Antarctic territories east and south of the Falkland Islands, including the South Orkney Islands, creating the colony of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. Argentina also claims the islands, but after the signing of the Antarctic Treaty in 1959, all territorial claims were frozen indefinitely, and the islands can be used by any state signatory to the Treaty for scientific purposes.
