Description: Stephen Sondheim "Passion," by Al Hirschfeld original pen and ink drawing. Artist: Albert Hirschfeld (1903-2003) Title: Passion: The Nude Scene [From the Stephen Sondheim Musical “Passion,” Georgio and Fosca together in Fosca's bedroom] Medium: Original pen and ink drawing on board, framed Framing: High quality burl angled down to outer edge with repeated marquetry pattern on inner segment bordered by black U-channel and inner edge. Wide black matting. Signed: Manually signed by the artist HIRSCHFELD in ink, lower right, followed by number 3 Sight size: 19.5 x 24.125" Frame size: 28.75 x 33.5" (outside dimension) Provenance: The present owner acquired the drawing from The Margo Feiden Galleries Ltd, New York August 10, 1994. As a Hirschfeld collector and Sondheim enthusiast, Margo Feiden contacted me in the summer of 1994 to say that the NYT rejected this image for its Sunday "Arts and Entertainment" section feature because it didn’t feature the actual star of “Passion,” Donna Murphy. In response, Hirschfeld created a new image, which does feature Ms. Murphy, but now has Marin Mazzie and Jere Shea (featured in this listed item) in the background. That second image may remain available online, but to me it more reflects Hirschfeld's having to come up with something overnight to suit the NYT editors, rather than his enthusiasm in capturing the intimacy of the show's opening scene. Very sadly, Ms. Mazzie passed away from ovarian cancer in 2018 at the age of 57. If you’re reading this, you most likely know of her other Tony-nominated roles, and other extensive theatrical work. Immediately post-“Passion,” I shared the drawing with her during a previously scheduled regional theater engagement in Michigan; she was delighted with the image. The drawing was framed by Saper Galleries in East Lansing, Michigan, a regionally recognized high quality gallery, and is conservation mounted, and has been kept ineither a no-light or very low-light non-smoking room since I acquired it. It is currently hung in a room with other Sondheim-related Hirschfelds, one of which is also posted for sale: a portrait of Sondheim at approximately age 70 that I commissioned from Hirschfeld. As the original owner, I am not aware of any prior publication of the image. And no permission is given here to reproduce the image from this site. I’m happy to provideprovenance documentation and additional detailed photographs.
