Description: Up for auction is this Coxsackie, New York, Charter #1398, $10.00 1902-Red Seal Large Size National, Fr. #613, with treasury signatures of Judson W. Lyons as Register of the Treasury and Ellis H. Roberts as Treasurer of The United States. The cashier of this bank is Albert Parker and the President of the bank is Platt Coonley. This bank chartered in 1865 as “The National Bank of Coxsackie, New York”. The bank issued 146,228 large size Nationals, from 1865 thru 1929 when the Bureau of Engraving and Printing switched over to printing Series 1929 Small Size National Banknotes. Coxsackie, NY was a one bank town, which makes it more desirable. This small town bank still exists today with its original name! The note has lovely margins all around on both sides of the note. The paper is bright, crisp for the grade and has embossing at the Charter Numbers. Lastly, I do not see any rips, tears, minor splits but I do see three tiny pinholes in the left side of this note. PMG has graded this note as Very Fine 25. Please look at the scans carefully and judge the grade and quality of this note for yourself. The Kelly Census shows 18 large size notes reported on this bank. There are 1 – Original Series 1863 $1.00 Ace, 1 – Series 1882 $20.00 Brown Back, 1 – Series 1902 $10.00 Red Seal, 2 – Series 1902 $10.00 Date Backs, 2 – Series 1902 $20.00 Date Backs, 6 – Series 1902 $5.00 Plain Backs and 5 – Series 1902 $10.00 Plain Backs. This note is probably the most desirable note known on this bank, as Red Seals were only issued for 3 years before they switched to Date Backs! This note has been listed in the census, for many years as it first appeared in a Hickman – Oaks Sale many years back and was purchased by William Anton Jr. This note would make a fine addition to any New York State banknote collection. The bank was located in Greene County, so it should appeal to those collecting that County and its surrounding areas. This note should also appeal to residents from that town.
