Each of them is dated 1879 on their title-page. These are numbers 101-105 in the series, which is gilt-stamped on the spine of the volume. This mini 3 1/8" x 4 3/4" volume [with 818 pages total] of Harper & Brothers distinguished Half-Hour Series of literary works. It was part of a "Bequest" to the Whitman Library (Fine Editions Room) from the notable American naturalist, horticulturist, and ornithologist, and the first curator (and second director) of the Smithsonian Museum, Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887). It was Baird who took it upon himself, given the rather delicate form (paper wrappers) of each title (146 in total), to have the whole Harper's Series, many of them first editions, uniquely bound in ½ leather with marbled boards, five titles to a volume. It was in this form that his bequest arrived, at some later date, at the Whitman Library. The five titles in this volume include (all pictured above): #101. Six Months on a Slaver: A True Narrative, by Edward Manning. This is the first edition of the 128 page volume. This title, and #103, are the gems of this volume. There is a tiny chip to the right edge of the front paper wrapper. Here is a brief synopsis: Six Months on a Slaver is a true narrative providing a realistic description of the horrors of the slave trade from an eye witness. An experience of an American seaman who ships from New London, Conn., in 1860, on a three years' cruise, in an ostensible whaler, which proves to be a slaver on its way to the African Ivory coast. This is a plain, unvarnished, and descriptive narrative of the passage and the cargo of kidnapped Africans, sold into bondage from their homelands and families. The author, Edward Manning, was a sailor who, in 1860, signed on with the "whaling" ship "Thomas Watson" only to later find it was a "slaver", on a voyage to transport slaves from Africa for money. He also give a brief description of the "Kroomen" who were the Kru people--more valuable as traders and sailors on slave ships than as slave labor. To ensure their status as “freemen,” they initiated the practice of tattooing their foreheads and the bridge of their nose with indigo dye to distinguish them from slave labor. Knowing the in-shore waters of the western coast of Africa, and having nautical experience, they were employed as sailors, navigators, interpreters, and guards aboard slave ships.Chapters include: Voyage out, the English Man-of-War, the Palm oil merchant, receiving the cargo, the Kroomen, sanitary and other arrangements, the death of Steve, Drunkenness of the Captain and other incidents, in human punishment for stealing water, plus a few more. #102. Healthy Houses by Fleeming Jenkin, F.R.S.: Adapted to American Conditions by George E. Waring, Jr. With 6 illustrations, the first in color. This is the first edition. Rare copy. I've never seen another for sale. 122 pages. #103. Mr. Grantley's Idea, by John Esten Cooke. This is another first edition, a narrative of rural Virginia. As the above, I've never seen another copy of this first edition for sale. 154 pages. John Esten Cooke was a novelist and literary man of some distinction and served, during the Civil War, as an officer in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. He was at one time an aide to General J.E.B. Stuart. #104. The Four Georges: Sketches of Manners, Morals, Court and Town Life. By William Makepeace Thackeray. This is a first printing in the Half-Hour series format. Harper & Brothers had published a first edition of this title (preceding the English edition) in 1860. Both this title and the one below are, in this format, extremely rare. 205 pages. #105. Swift, Congreve, Addison and Steele. By William Makepeace Thackeray. This is also the first printing of this title in this format. Harper & Brothers had previously published, along with other essays, the works in this volume as part of Thackeray's "Lectures on the English Humorists" in 1853. 209 pages Condition: Please zoom in on photos carefully as they are part of the description.
